Barbara Shields Rote

Barbara Shields Rote, 48, passed away April 28th of heart failure at the Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles. Barbara was born January 11, 1964 in Port Angeles.

Barbara was the daughter of Joan Shields Bennett and her late husband, Navy Seabee, CMA3 Marvin G. Shields, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966 for his heroic actions in Vietnam. 

As a member of a Navy family Barbara lived in numerous locations, including Hawaii, Virginia, New York, Georgia, California as well as Washington.

A graduate of Radford High School in Honolulu, Hawaii she later graduated from Whitworth University in Spokane in 1986 where she received a nursing degree. Barbara was a registered nurse at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane, Washington and later was a home health care nurse for severely ill home-bound children in Snohomish and King Counties. She subsequently worked for Blue Cross-Blue Shield Insurance applying her nursing knowledge in evaluating health claims.


Barbara was married to Christopher Woods August 2nd 1992. Following a divorce, she later married Steven Rote at Westport, June 18, 2001 and resided in Olympia, Washington.


She was a long-time member of the Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Lacey where she served as a council member. She enjoyed many hand crafts including quilting, ceramics, sewing, and loved outdoor camping with her family. She was a loving wife, and devoted mother, as well as a caring friend, being generous and jovial with a quick laugh and warm embrace.


Barbara is survived by her loving husband Steven of Olympia, daughter Sarah Elizabeth Woods of Molalla, Oregon, stepson, Michael Rote of Puyallup, stepdaughter Mrs. Ryan (Alexis) Belrose of Everett, parents Dick & Joan Bennett of Gardiner, and sister Mrs. Todd (Stephanie) Wright of Kenmore
